“Harvey”, A Custom Van With A Custom Wheelchair Lift, Keeps Couple On The Go

Shaffer Family
Northumberland, PA— Paul and Barbara Schaffer’s have gotten themselves “Harvey”, a Sprinter van that’s been modified to accommodate Barbara’s wheelchair. It’s named after the white rabbit from the old movie of the same name. Barbara, 60, suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, a debilitating nerve condition, and has been using a battery-powered wheelchair for several years.
Deciding that they wanted to travel more and spend time camping, they decided to get a motor home, but finding one just right for their needs proved tough. Then, they found Sportmobile, which makes custom vans. Finally, they had to find a van wheelchair lift that wouldn’t occupy space inside the van. Eventually, they found found, Creative Controls, in Madison Heights, MI, who could mount their lift under any vehicle.
The couple were thrilled with the final results, when Creative Controls demonstrated the lift, folding out from under the van.
